As we move forward with our plans to adopt and deploy generative AI technologies, it is imperative that we do so in a responsible manner that minimizes risks and maximizes benefits. Here are my recommendations for focusing our initiatives:
Start Small but Start Now:
Rather than trying to implement generative AI across the entire company immediately, I recommend we begin with a small pilot program within one department. This will allow us to identify issues and improve before scaling company-wide. But we should act now while we are still early adopters in this space.
Transparency is Key:
We must be fully transparent with our customers, partners, and the public about how our AI systems work and the decisions they make. Lack of transparency will breed mistrust. I recommend we establish guidelines for AI transparency that all product teams must follow.
Evaluate for Bias:
Before deploying any generative AI models, we should have processes in place to rigorously evaluate them for potential biases and issues that could harm customers or society. Any issues found must be fixed or the models cannot be released.
Establish Governance:
We will need a formal governance structure to oversee the ethical and responsible use of generative AI within the company. This includes setting policies, assigning responsibilities, and monitoring performance and impacts. I recommend you appoint an AI Ethics Board to fulfill this role.
Continuous Improvement:
Generative AI is an evolving field. We must commit to continuously improving our models, uses cases, governance, and processes as we learn more. We cannot take a "set it and forget it" approach.
